Breaking the Cycle of Dysfunction: Reforming Wage Negotiations for a Just and Efficient Nigeria
Envision the transformative potential if we established a committee with the proper mandate to handle wage negotiation between the government and the unions. Could we then dispense with the need for the Secretary of the Government of the Federation (SGF), National Security Adviser (NSA), Chief of Staff, etc., to intervene in union negotiations, freeing them to address pressing state issues? Some people thrive in dysfunction and act as conflict entrepreneurs.
As this saga unfolds, the harsh reality of corruption is laid bare. The billions set aside to alleviate the suffering of the impoverished would have been shamelessly squandered in these negotiations. It’s a bitter truth that 80% of this expenditure will have lined private pockets. So, through labor struggles, some will amass vast wealth. This is an unjust, heart-rending reality that should stir our collective indignation!
As the dust settles on this conflict, we will be confronted with the staggering cost of trillions of Naira in avoidable lost person-hours and investments. This is a crisis we cannot afford to ignore!
To rectify these issues, the appropriate government organs that resolve labor-management conflicts should be empowered to act proactively. This could include regular audits of negotiation processes, strict enforcement of anti-corruption laws, and establishing a transparent and accountable system for fund allocation. Appointments in those folds must not be based on party affiliations. This is a crucial step we must take for the betterment of our nation!
There are still so many rivers to cross. Grace and peace to you!!!
