A Comrade wrote a story on his wall on Meta and quoted Matthew 15:4 “For God commanded, saying, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death. He also quoted’ Leviticus 15: 15-17
Unfortunately, my Comrade seemingly was clever by half because he took these scriptures without delving further into other areas of the Bible and how Jesus Christ dealt with such cases in the Holy Scriptures. He also restricted the responses to only himself, which meant the public could not see other people’s comments. Fair enough, we are friends on Meta.
Anyway, hereunder is my reply because what he has pushed to the public will further consolidate the use of jungle justice among the gullible. We should not allow such in a fragile nation so religiously divided as Nigeria.
“My dear Brother, let us use the gift of God to preach peace. Sure you wrote this supporting the death of Deborah. You would have also allowed the public to read our responses. However, when Jesus was asked what the greatest law was. He said, “To love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind…The second is to love your neighbor as yourself – Matthew 22:36-40; Mark 12, and Luke 10,”
His mantra implies that if you truly loved God, and your neighbor as yourself, then:
1. You will honor your father and mother (Exodus 20:12)
2. You will not murder anyone like those who killed Deborah in Sokoto (Exodus 20:13).
3. You will not commit adultery (Exodus 20:14)
4. You will not steal (Exodus 20:15)
5. You will not lie (Exodus 20:16)
6. You will not steal or covet other people’s belongings to yourself (Exodus 20:17)
Jesus showed an example of His preaching when an adulterous woman, who should have been stoned to death as prescribed by the traditions and practices, was brought to Him for condemnation. He looked at the crowd, looked at the woman, began to scribble on the sand, and said, if there be anyone without sin among you, let the person cast the first stone. They all disappeared. Jesus refused to condemn the woman; she was set free and told to sin no more- John 7:53–8:11.
If you cannot forgive them in your religion, report them to Sharia police or charge them to Sharia court. Let us stop encouraging jungle justice.”
Grace and peace!!!
