The Irony of June 12: Reflecting on IBB’s Legacy and the Responsibility of Leadership

I do not know how true it is, but there is an extract being quoted from Prof. Omo Omoruyi’s book that IBB confessed that if he did not annul June 12, 1993 elections, he would have been killed by some top military officers from the middle belt and the Northern part of the country. But those mentioned as culprits later became beneficiaries of democracy. What an irony to become a beneficiary of a system one never believed in.

But IBB has always said he was right annuling June 12 elections. So, when did he come to the realization of this guilt?

In any case, head or tail, IBB knows very well that the buck ends on the leaders table. Besides, all leadership books tell us that one of the ingredients of a good leader is taking responsibilities for action or inaction while leading. So, leaders should always take responsibility for their actions. Therefore, in my opinion, IBB is responsible for the actions of his junta on June 12.

Fajuyi did not pretend to know that he was sacrificing his life for Nigeria when he refused to detach himself from Ironsi at the point of death. That is a leader.

IBB’s role in our political history is indelible, and no amount of time can erase the memory of his error of judgment on June 12, 1993. Now a symbol of democratic struggle in Nigeria, June 12 is a stark reminder of the enduring negative consequences of his actions.

IBB’s influence during his rule was immense, and his wealth ensures that his descendants will not suffer poverty for four generations. However, life is not just about material wealth. Regrettably, the horizon of his legacy is gradually darkening, a potential stain that could mar his reputation.

We all read about the end of Nzeribe, his co-traveler-in-chief. IBB will always be guilty of the June 12 annulment crime against Nigeria, now and hereinafter.

A time shall come when getting out of his vast palatial mansion will be impossible. He would then be wrestling with postives and negatives as he sojourned through his career.

The message also applies to us all. Let it not be lost on us that our good or bad deeds are not only waiting for heavenly rewards. They will resonate loudly, and clearly here on earth as we go down the tunnel of our last home, which is 6 ft below.

Grace and peace!!!
