Perishing on Potholes: The Deadly Neglect of the Benin-Warri Road and the Cry for Urgent Action

How many more vehicles would perish, and how many more people would die due to the bad road between Benin and Warri before we say, enough is enough?

On the 63rd Independence Day of Nigeria, people were killed, and properties were destroyed on a failed Federal Road that had become a death trap. Sadly, on the fourth day of the incident, no agent of the Federal Government deemed it fit to visit the scene.

Little acts of sympathy and empathy in times of catastrophe, like the Ologbo-Koko incident, build nationalism and patriotism.

The East-West Road links Calabar, Port Harcourt, Ughelli, Warri, Sapele, and Ologbo (an oil and gas-producing community) to Benin. It is a central trunk line and road network that links southern states with the rest of the country. The road carries thousands of petroleum product tankers from the Niger Delta to other parts of the country and a pathway to trailers carrying iron rods, livestock, and foodstuffs from the North to the south-south region and vice-versa, It would have been expected that any country with that type of road network, would ensure that the road is motorable all year round.
