Reviving Democracy: Lessons from Coups and Paths to a Prosperous Nigeria
We all know now that a democracy that takes the people for granted may last only for a period. No matter how long, it will crumble. The francophone nations have shown that even the goat would fight when pinned to the wall.
Nigeria could be the primary beneficiary of the coups sweeping across the continent. It only needs to go back to the drawing board to give our democracy its true meaning in fiscal federalism and give freedom to our judiciary, the local government, and the regions to freely produce what is under the ground for the people’s good. The center could still be powerful because of the enormous resources in Nigeria.
With good planning and less looting of the treasury, downsizing the massive governance structure, reverting to the parliamentary system in which ministers are parliamentarians, thereby saving double dipping, getting our refineries running optimally and constructing new ones, asking any nation that wants our raw materials to come here and set up their industries, investing in gas as a destination fuel, Nigeria in 10 years will be the country to be. But would we latch on to the opportunity staring at us in the face to turn things around for good?
Grace and peace!!!
